Introduction

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that feed on human blood, usually while people are asleep. During the day they hide in the seams of mattresses, joints of bed frames, sofa cushions, curtain folds and even behind switchboards, which makes them very difficult to spot.

Two species are found in Pakistan: the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) and the tropical bed bug (Cimex hemipterus), which thrives in warm climates. They spread by hitchhiking in luggage, used furniture, bedding and clothes — so hostels, hotels, rented homes and frequent travellers are most at risk.

Because eggs are protected and adults can survive for months without a meal, one spray rarely works. Effective bed bug treatment combines detailed inspection, steam heat, residual products labelled for bed bugs and at least one follow-up treatment timed to the egg-hatching cycle.

Species

Common bed bugs species in Pakistan

Correct identification decides the treatment. These are the types our technicians find most often.

Common bed bug

Cimex lectularius
Size: 4–5 mm

Found worldwide in homes, hotels and hostels. Oval and flat before feeding, swollen and darker red after a blood meal.

Tropical bed bug

Cimex hemipterus
Size: 4–5 mm

Very common in warm regions including South Asia; slightly more elongated. Same habits and treatment approach as the common bed bug.

Nymphs

Immature stages
Size: 1.5–4.5 mm

Five stages, each needing a blood meal to moult. Pale, almost translucent when unfed, so they are easy to miss.

Eggs

Size: ~1 mm

Pearly-white, glued in cracks and seams in clusters. They hatch in about 1–2 weeks, which is why follow-up treatment matters.

Health risk

Why bed bugs are a problem

Itchy bites & skin reactions

Bites often appear in lines or clusters on arms, neck and legs. Some people react with large itchy welts; others show no marks at all.

Secondary infections

Heavy scratching can break the skin and lead to bacterial skin infections.

Sleep loss & anxiety

Being bitten at night causes insomnia, stress and anxiety, which often last until the infestation is fully gone.

Rapid spread

Bed bugs move easily between rooms and flats and travel in luggage — one infested room can quickly become a whole building.

Warning signs

Signs of a bed bug infestation

  • Itchy bites in lines or clusters after sleeping
  • Small rust-coloured or dark spots on sheets and mattress seams
  • Tiny pale eggs and shed skins in seams and joints
  • Live bugs in mattress piping, bed frames or sofa joints
  • A sweet, musty smell in heavily infested rooms

Solution for this pest

How PestVira gets rid of bed bugs

Our Integrated Pest Management process for bed bugs — the least-hazardous effective method, applied exactly where it is needed.

Room-by-room inspection

We inspect mattresses, bed frames, sofas, curtains, sockets and nearby rooms to find every hiding place and judge how far the infestation has spread.

Preparation plan

You receive a simple checklist: which bedding and clothes to wash hot, what to bag, and how to prepare rooms so the treatment reaches every crack.

Steam + residual treatment

High-temperature steam kills bugs and eggs on contact in seams and fabric. A residual product labelled for bed bugs is then applied to cracks, frames and furniture joints.

Follow-up visit

A second treatment roughly 10–14 days later kills nymphs that hatched from protected eggs. We inspect again and advise on mattress encasements.

Prevention

How to prevent bed bugs

  • Inspect hotel beds and headboards before unpacking; keep luggage on a rack.
  • Wash and tumble-dry travel clothes on high heat after trips.
  • Check second-hand furniture and mattresses carefully before bringing them home.
  • Use zippered, bed-bug-proof mattress encasements.
  • Reduce clutter around beds where bugs can hide.
  • Act at the first bite — small infestations are far easier to clear.

Ask us a question

How do I get rid of bed bugs (khatmal) permanently?

Permanent removal needs a combination of steam heat, residual products labelled for bed bugs and at least one follow-up treatment about two weeks later to kill newly hatched nymphs. Washing bedding hot and reducing clutter helps the treatment work.

Why do bed bugs come back after treatment?

Usually because eggs survived a single treatment, hiding places were missed, or bugs were re-introduced from luggage, furniture or a neighbouring flat. A proper multi-visit programme with inspection of adjoining rooms prevents this.

Do bed bugs spread diseases?

Bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases to people. The main health effects are itchy bites, skin reactions, secondary infections from scratching, and sleep loss and anxiety.

Can bed bugs live in sofas and clothes?

Yes. Bed bugs hide in sofa seams, cushions, curtains, wardrobes and piles of clothes near where people sleep or rest. That is why we treat the whole room, not only the bed.

How long does bed bug treatment take?

A typical home treatment takes 2–4 hours per visit, with a follow-up visit 10–14 days later. Rooms can usually be used again once treated surfaces are dry.

Should I throw away my mattress?

In most cases no. Mattresses can be treated and then sealed in an encasement. Throwing an infested mattress out without treatment can spread bed bugs through the building.
