Introduction

What are flies?

Flies are more than a nuisance. House flies feed and breed on garbage, sewage and animal waste, and then land on food, plates and kitchen counters — carrying germs on their legs and bodies and leaving vomit and droppings behind.

In hot Pakistani summers a house fly can go from egg to adult in about a week, so populations explode quickly around bins, drains, markets, restaurants and livestock areas. Fruit flies and drain flies are also common indoors, breeding in rotting fruit, sugary spills and the slime layer inside drains.

Effective fly control starts with the breeding source. Our programmes combine sanitation and waste advice, drain cleaning treatments, targeted baits and residual treatments on resting surfaces, and professional insect light traps (ILTs) for food and healthcare premises.

Species

Common flies species in Pakistan

Correct identification decides the treatment. These are the types our technicians find most often.

House fly

Musca domestica
Size: 6–7 mm

Grey with four dark stripes on the thorax. Breeds in garbage and manure and is the most common fly in homes and food businesses.

Blow flies

Family Calliphoridae
Size: 8–12 mm

Metallic green or blue flies attracted to meat, dead animals and waste. Loud buzzing; often signal a dead rodent nearby.

Fruit flies

Drosophila spp.
Size: 2–4 mm

Tiny flies with red eyes that breed in ripe fruit, juice, bottles and sugary residues in bars and kitchens.

Drain flies

Family Psychodidae
Size: 2–5 mm

Small, fuzzy, moth-like flies that breed in the organic slime inside drains, sinks and floor traps.

Health risk

Why flies are a problem

Diarrhoeal diseases

Flies can mechanically carry the germs behind diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid and cholera from waste onto food.

Eye infections

Flies are linked with the spread of eye infections such as conjunctivitis and trachoma, especially where sanitation is poor.

Food safety failures

Flies in kitchens, food production and packaging areas are a common reason for failed hygiene inspections.

Customer complaints

Visible flies in restaurants, hotels and clinics damage reputation instantly.

Warning signs

Signs of a fly infestation

  • Flies clustering around bins, drains and waste areas
  • Small flies hovering over sinks, drains or fruit bowls
  • Fly specks (small dark dots) on walls, lights and ceilings
  • Maggots in garbage bins or waste areas
  • Sudden large numbers of blow flies indoors

Solution for this pest

How PestVira gets rid of flies

Our Integrated Pest Management process for flies — the least-hazardous effective method, applied exactly where it is needed.

Source inspection

We locate breeding sites — bins, waste rooms, drains, grease traps, animal areas and damaged produce — and assess entry points such as doors and windows.

Sanitation plan

You receive practical steps on waste handling, bin cleaning schedules and drain maintenance that remove the breeding source.

Treatment & equipment

Drains receive bio-enzymatic cleaning; baits and residual treatments are applied where flies rest. Food premises get correctly placed insect light traps with glue boards.

Monitoring

Glue boards in light traps are counted and changed on each visit, giving a clear trend report for managers and auditors.

Prevention

How to prevent flies

  • Keep bins lidded and empty them daily, especially in summer.
  • Clean drains and floor traps weekly to remove slime build-up.
  • Cover food and throw away over-ripe fruit.
  • Install fly mesh on windows and keep doors closed.
  • Rinse bottles and cans before storing them for recycling.
  • Clean up pet and animal waste promptly.

Flies: questions people ask

Answers to the most searched questions about flies in Pakistan.

Ask us a question

How do I get rid of flies in my house quickly?

Remove what attracts and feeds them — open bins, uncovered food, over-ripe fruit and dirty drains — then use screens on windows and doors. For persistent problems, professional baits and treatment of breeding sites give fast, lasting results.

What diseases do house flies spread?

House flies can carry germs that cause diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid, cholera and some eye infections, by moving from waste onto food and surfaces.

Where do tiny flies in the kitchen come from?

Small flies usually come from fruit flies breeding in ripe fruit and sugary residues, or drain flies breeding in the slime inside sinks and floor drains. Cleaning the source is essential.

Are insect light traps effective for restaurants?

Yes. Correctly positioned insect light traps with glue boards catch flies without scattering insect fragments over food, and the catch counts help show trends to auditors. They work best alongside sanitation and screening.

Why are there so many flies in summer?

Heat speeds up the fly life cycle to about a week, and waste decomposes faster, giving them more breeding material. That is why fly control needs more frequent attention from April to September.
