Why Cockroaches Keep Coming Back in Lahore Apartments — and How to Stop Them for Good
You sprayed, they vanished for a week, and now they're back. Here is why cockroaches return in Lahore apartments — and the method that actually ends the cycle.
It's one of the most common calls we get from apartment residents in Gulberg, Johar Town, DHA and Bahria Town: "We sprayed last month, the cockroaches disappeared, and now they're back — even more than before." If that sounds familiar, you're not doing anything wrong. You are fighting a pest that is designed to survive exactly this kind of treatment.
Reason 1: Sprays only kill what they touch
Most household sprays are contact killers. They work on the cockroaches you see running across the floor — but for every cockroach you see at night, many more are hiding behind cabinets, inside the fridge motor, under the sink and in wall gaps. Worse, many sprays are repellent: the surviving cockroaches move deeper into the walls or into the neighbouring flat and come back when the smell fades.
Reason 2: Egg cases survive
A German cockroach female carries a purse-shaped egg case (ootheca) containing dozens of eggs until they are almost ready to hatch. The case protects the eggs from most sprays. A few weeks after a "successful" spray, a new generation hatches — and the cycle starts again.

Reason 3: Lahore apartment buildings share everything
In apartment buildings, flats are connected by drains, soil stacks, electrical conduits, service shafts and shared walls. The large reddish-brown American cockroach lives in sewer lines and comes up through floor traps and bathroom drains — especially after monsoon rains flood the city's drainage system. Treating one flat without treating drains and entry points means cockroaches simply walk back in.
Reason 4: Food, water and warmth are always available
Cockroaches need water daily. A slow-dripping tap, AC condensation, a wet sink cabinet or a pet water bowl is enough. Add crumbs behind the stove and warm spaces inside appliances, and a Lahore kitchen from April to September is a perfect breeding ground.
What actually works: the gel bait method
Professional cockroach control in Lahore focuses on the hidden population:
- Inspection with a flushing agent to find where cockroaches are living — hinges, appliance motors, gaps behind the backsplash.
- Gel bait placed in tiny dots in cracks and hiding places. Cockroaches eat it, return to their harbourage and pass it to others.
- Insect growth regulator (IGR) so nymphs cannot mature and breed.
- Drain and floor-trap treatment for American cockroaches coming from the sewer.
- A follow-up visit after two to three weeks to treat the newly hatched generation.
- Fix dripping taps and wet sink cabinets
- Cover floor traps with mesh or keep them water-sealed
- Don't leave dishes in the sink overnight
- Store food, sugar and pet food in sealed containers
- Remove stacks of cardboard and newspapers
- Seal gaps around pipes under the sink
- Don't spray over gel bait — it makes bait less attractive
- Clean behind the stove and fridge monthly
