Dengue Season in Lahore — A Month-by-Month Prevention Plan for Your Home
Dengue returns to Lahore after every monsoon. This month-by-month plan shows exactly what to do — and when — to keep Aedes mosquitoes out of your home.
Every year the same pattern repeats: the monsoon rains arrive in July, water collects on rooftops, in tanks, pots, tyres and construction sites, and a few weeks later dengue cases start rising across Lahore — usually peaking between September and November before cooler weather arrives.
Dengue is spread mainly by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in small amounts of clean standing water around homes and bites mostly in the early morning and late afternoon. That means the most important battlefield is not the hospital or the street — it is your rooftop, lawn and balcony.
The Lahore dengue calendar
The exact timing shifts with rainfall each year, but the lesson is constant: start before the peak. By the time dengue cases are in the news, mosquitoes have already bred through several generations.
June: prepare before the monsoon
- Clear rooftops, gutters and drain outlets so rainwater can't stand.
- Get rid of old tyres, broken pots, tins and bottles in the lawn and on the roof.
- Check that overhead and underground water tanks have tight lids.
- Repair window and door mesh screens.
- Book a pre-monsoon mosquito treatment for larger houses and societies.
July–August: the breeding months
This is when prevention matters most. Aedes can go from egg to biting adult in about 7–10 days in hot weather.
- Empty and scrub flower-pot saucers and trays
- Change water in birdbaths and pet bowls
- Empty desert cooler trays and AC drip pans
- Check rooftop for puddles after rain
- Look inside buckets, drums and water storage
- Cover or turn over anything that holds water
- Check construction material and plastic sheets
- Clean roof gutters and balcony drains
September–October: peak risk, protect people too
Keep up the weekly check and add personal protection:
- Wear long sleeves and trousers in the early morning and evening.
- Use mosquito repellent on exposed skin, especially for children.
- Use bed nets for infants and anyone resting during the day.
- Treat shaded resting places — under plants, in garages, behind curtains.
- Anyone with high fever, severe body pain or pain behind the eyes should see a doctor promptly.
November: don't stop too early
Cases usually fall as temperatures drop in November, but mosquitoes remain active on warm days. Continue weekly checks until nights are consistently cold.
What professional dengue control includes
- 1Breeding surveyEvery roof, tank, pot, drain and water point checked
- 2Source reductionRemove, cover or drain what can be removed
- 3LarvicidingTreat water that can't be removed, incl. biological Bti
- 4Barrier sprayResidual spray on shaded vegetation and resting spots
- 5FoggingKnock down adult mosquitoes when numbers are high
Fogging alone gives a quick visible result but does not affect larvae in water, so numbers bounce back within days. Lasting control needs breeding-site treatment every 2–4 weeks through the season.
